ChatGPT shopping: how Shopify products get chosen
How ChatGPT shopping picks products and merchants, where it gets your Shopify data, and what you control: Agentic Storefronts, catalog quality and policies.
ChatGPT shows product results when someone asks it what to buy. OpenAI says those results are chosen for relevance, not sold as ads. For a Shopify store, the product data mostly comes from Shopify itself, through Agentic Storefronts, and the buyer pays on your own checkout. Here is how a product gets chosen, and what you control.
This article is part of our guide to agentic commerce on Shopify. Every outside fact links to its source, checked in October 2026.
What shopping in ChatGPT looks like today
ChatGPT started showing product results in April 2025: images, prices, reviews and links to buy. Since then, OpenAI has added:
- Shopping research (November 2025), which returns a detailed buyer's guide after a few minutes of research (OpenAI).
- Visual browsing (March 2026): side-by-side comparisons of price, reviews and features, and a search for lookalike products from an image (OpenAI).
- Virtual try-on and saved products (October 2026), according to OpenAI's release notes.
OpenAI says shopping is currently live for ChatGPT users in the United States (OpenAI for merchants). The audience is large: ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week, OpenAI said in October 2026.
Where the buyer pays
In September 2025, OpenAI launched Instant Checkout, which let US users buy some items without leaving the chat. In March 2026 it changed course. Merchants now use their own checkout, and OpenAI focuses on product discovery (OpenAI).
For a Shopify store, the Shopify Help Center is explicit. ChatGPT buyers complete their purchase on your online store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser, or in a new tab on ChatGPT's website. Your branding, checkout customizations and payment methods all apply. Google AI Mode and Gemini work differently: there, US shoppers can pay inside Google, through the Universal Commerce Protocol.
How ChatGPT chooses products
Relevance, not ads
OpenAI's help center states that product results are selected independently by ChatGPT, are not ads and are not influenced by OpenAI partnerships (OpenAI Help Center).
A product shows up when ChatGPT judges it relevant to what the shopper wants. ChatGPT reads the request and its context, such as Memory and custom instructions, and it may weigh price, reviews and ease of use. The weight depends on the request: mention a budget, and price counts for more.
To build its results, ChatGPT draws on structured product data, such as price and description, from merchants and third-party providers. It also reads other third-party content. OpenAI's product feed documentation adds that being eligible never guarantees that a product is shown (OpenAI).
How merchants are ranked for the same product
When several merchants sell the same product, ChatGPT lists them. OpenAI names the factors it uses to rank them: availability, price, quality, and whether the merchant is the maker or the primary seller. The first price shown is usually the first-listed merchant's, and it isn't always the lowest.
What ChatGPT writes about your products
ChatGPT may rewrite product titles and descriptions. It also adds labels of its own, such as "Budget-friendly" or "Most popular". OpenAI says these labels are generated by the model and are not verified statements. Review summaries are generated from reviews published on public websites, and OpenAI doesn't verify reviews or ratings.
Ads are separate
Since February 2026, OpenAI has been testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States. They appear on the Free and Go plans only, below the answer, labeled as sponsored (OpenAI Help Center). OpenAI says ads don't change what ChatGPT answers. Appearing in ads and appearing in product results are two separate things.
Where ChatGPT gets your Shopify products
Shopify Catalog, through Agentic Storefronts
OpenAI says Shopify catalogs are already integrated into ChatGPT, with no setup or application needed (OpenAI for merchants). On Shopify's side, this runs through Agentic Storefronts. Shopify announced them in its Winter '26 Edition and turned them on in ChatGPT in March 2026 (Shopify). Products become discoverable by default, with no apps and no transaction fees beyond standard payment processing. You remain the merchant of record.
Shopify Catalog shares your titles, descriptions, images, prices, options and availability with AI channels, and keeps them up to date (Shopify Help Center). Catalog mapping lets you take some of that data from metafields instead.
Shopify says this structured data pays off. On its Q2 2026 earnings call, Shopify said AI searches powered by Shopify Catalog convert at twice the rate of those using scraped data (call transcript).
Who is eligible
To sell on ChatGPT through Shopify, your store must meet four conditions (Shopify Help Center):
- It sells to customers in the United States. The store itself can be based elsewhere.
- Its products are eligible for Shopify Catalog.
- You have accepted the Agentic Storefronts supplemental terms of service.
- Your terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy are completed in your Shopify settings.
For a product to be eligible for Shopify Catalog, Shopify asks for a Starter plan or higher, a store that isn't password-protected, and a product with a title, at least one image and a price above zero. The product must be published with a product URL, not unlisted or hidden from search engines, and the account must be in good standing (Shopify Help Center).
The web crawler: OAI-SearchBot
ChatGPT also reads the open web. Its search crawler is called OAI-SearchBot. If your robots.txt blocks it, your pages no longer appear in ChatGPT's search answers, although they can still show up as navigational links. A robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to apply (OpenAI).
GPTBot is a separate crawler, used to train OpenAI's models. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot. Shopping research also reads public retail pages, and it skips sites that block automated access (OpenAI Help Center).
What you control in your Shopify admin
Shopify groups the settings under Sales channels > Agentic (Shopify Help Center). The default setting, Allow Shopify to manage for me, keeps every channel active and enrolls your store in future channels automatically. Turn it off to manage channels one by one.
- Remove ChatGPT's access to your catalog. It can take up to 7 days before your product data stops being shared. ChatGPT may still find your products through web crawling and indexing.
- Hide a product from AI channels completely by setting its status to Unlisted. Shopify warns that this also hides it from sitemaps, search engines such as Google, and your online store search.
- Preview how your products appear in Catalog search, and read sales and performance data for each AI channel.
- See where orders come from. ChatGPT orders arrive in your admin with ChatGPT referral attribution.
How to give your products a better chance
No setting buys a placement. Shopify says inclusion in Shopify Catalog doesn't guarantee that a product is shown, and each AI channel decides how it ranks and describes products (Shopify Help Center). What you control is the quality of the data ChatGPT works from.
- Fill in the fields AI platforms read. Shopify lists the title, description, images, product type, vendor, collections, tags, barcode (GTIN, UPC or ISBN) and variants with their option names (Shopify Help Center).
- Keep stock and prices accurate. Availability and price are two of the factors OpenAI uses to rank merchants.
- Write descriptions as facts. ChatGPT may rewrite them, so give it materials, dimensions, uses and what's in the box, not slogans. Shopify also recommends putting any legal disclosures within the first 6,000 characters of the description.
- Complete your policies. Terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy are conditions for selling on ChatGPT.
- Let OAI-SearchBot in if you want web discovery. Check your robots.txt. Our free Shopify AI Readiness Checker shows which AI crawlers your store allows and what they can read.
- Answer questions about your store once. Shopify's free Knowledge Base app builds FAQs about your store for AI platforms and shows the questions AI agents ask. Shopify doesn't say which channels use it.
One more point on reviews: ChatGPT summarizes reviews published on public websites. Reviews that aren't published anywhere public can't feed that summary.
After the click: the buyer lands on your store
A buyer who clicks through from ChatGPT has usually picked a product already. In Q1 2026, more than half of AI-referred sessions on Shopify stores started on a product page, against about 20% for organic search (Shopify). The questions left are practical: which size, how long delivery takes, how returns work.
Those questions get answered in your store, not in ChatGPT. Reponse's storefront agent, the Ambassador, answers them in your store chat, from your catalog and policies. Before it shows a product, it checks the live price and availability with Shopify. It builds the cart and hands it to your Shopify checkout, and it hands over to your team when it can't answer. We make it, so hold it to the questions in our guide to agentic commerce, like any other vendor.
FAQ
How does ChatGPT choose which products to show?
ChatGPT shows the products it judges most relevant to the shopper's request and context. OpenAI says it may weigh price, reviews and ease of use, using structured product data from merchants and third parties. When several merchants sell the same product, ChatGPT ranks them on availability, price, quality and whether the merchant is the maker or primary seller.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT shopping results?
No. OpenAI says product results are not ads and are not influenced by its partnerships. Ads are a separate test, shown in the United States on the Free and Go plans, labeled as sponsored and placed below the answer.
Do Shopify stores need to apply to appear in ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI says Shopify catalogs are already integrated, and Agentic Storefronts makes eligible Shopify stores discoverable in ChatGPT by default. Your store must sell to customers in the United States, have products eligible for Shopify Catalog and have its policies completed.
Can shoppers pay for a Shopify product inside ChatGPT?
Not in the chat itself. ChatGPT opens your online store checkout, in its in-app browser or in a new tab on ChatGPT's website. OpenAI moved away from its in-chat Instant Checkout in March 2026 and now sends buyers to the merchant's own checkout.
Does ChatGPT take a commission on Shopify sales?
No. Shopify says ChatGPT sales through Agentic Storefronts carry no transaction fees beyond standard payment processing, and OpenAI says there are no fees on purchases made on the merchant's own site.
How do I remove my products from ChatGPT?
In Sales channels > Agentic, turn off ChatGPT's access to Shopify Catalog. It can take up to 7 days, and ChatGPT may still find your products through web crawling. To hide a product from every AI channel, set its status to Unlisted, which also hides it from search engines.
