Since March 2026, Shopify has put eligible stores' products in AI assistants by default: starting with ChatGPT; today Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta too. The sale can start outside your store, and in some channels it ends there too. Customer support doesn't move: customers still come to you for order status, returns and refunds. Here is what changes for your support team, channel by channel, and how to prepare.

This article is part of our guide to agentic commerce on Shopify. Every outside fact links to its source, checked in October 2026.

What Shopify Agentic Storefronts are

Shopify announced Agentic Storefronts in its Winter '26 Edition in December 2025. In March 2026, it opened ChatGPT to millions of merchants, with products discoverable by default (Shopify). Today, Shopify says Agentic Storefronts is active by default for eligible stores, across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta (Shopify Help Center).

Your products reach these channels through Shopify Catalog. Google AI Mode and Gemini take them from the Google & YouTube sales channel or Google Merchant Center. Every channel requires your terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy to be completed, and Agentic Storefronts only covers direct-to-consumer sales.

You manage the channels in Sales channels > Agentic (Shopify Help Center). The default setting, Allow Shopify to manage for me, keeps every channel active and enrolls your store in new ones. Turn it off to choose, channel by channel, whether it can read your catalog and whether it offers direct checkout.

Selling through these channels costs nothing today beyond your standard payment processing fees, according to Shopify's channel pages. Its Agentic Storefronts terms do allow it to charge a fee on transactions for certain channels in the future.

Two ways to pay, two kinds of customer

Where the customer pays depends on the channel. That decides what they see of your store before they write to you.

ChannelWhere the customer paysStore requirement
ChatGPTYour online store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tabYou sell to customers in the United States
Microsoft CopilotA Shopify-powered checkout inside the chatYou sell to customers in the United States
Google AI Mode and GeminiA direct checkout inside Google; customers outside the US finish on your storeYour store is based in the United States
MetaA direct checkout on a Meta surfaceYou sell to customers in the United States, Canada or Mexico

A ChatGPT buyer pays on your own checkout, with your branding and payment methods. A direct checkout is different. Shopify lists what it doesn't support, including loyalty or rewards experiences and chat or messaging experiences. In Google's and Meta's direct checkouts, Google Analytics, custom pixels and third-party marketing pixels don't fire either. If you turn off direct checkout for a channel, its shoppers are sent to your store to pay.

For support, that changes the customer you meet. Someone who bought inside Copilot or Gemini may never have visited your site, seen your store chat or joined your loyalty program. The first message they get from your brand is your order confirmation.

Before the sale: AI assistants answer for you

AI channels read your Shopify Catalog data: titles, descriptions, options, images, prices and availability (Shopify Help Center). Shopify also measures "shop policy completeness", whether your shipping, returns, refund and other policies are present. It says policies signal legitimacy and help AI channels recommend your products (Shopify Help Center).

For questions about your store, Shopify offers the free Knowledge Base app. It builds FAQs from your language, customer account, shipping and delivery settings and return rules. These FAQs aren't shown on your storefront: they are a data source for AI agents. The app keeps a log of the questions agents ask and lists the top unanswered ones, so you can add answers (Shopify Help Center). Its interface is in English, and each FAQ exists in one language. Shopify says it improves the accuracy of AI answers about your store, not how often your store appears.

For a support team, the lesson is simple. What an AI assistant promises about shipping and returns comes from your settings. A wrong setting becomes a wrong promise, then a ticket. And the questions agents couldn't answer before the sale are the ones your inbox will get after it.

After the sale: support stays with you

Customers come back to you

Every AI channel sends the customer back to the merchant for service:

  • Google tells shoppers that for all purchases the merchant handles payment, shipping, returns and customer support, and that order confirmation emails come directly from the merchant (Google Search Help). To cancel an order or return an item bought in Gemini, they are told to contact the merchant directly (Gemini Help).
  • Microsoft's terms require your receipt to give your contact details for any question about the purchase, and leave exchanges, returns, refunds and cancellations to you (Microsoft).
  • Meta: the orders appear in your Shopify admin like those of any other sales channel. You remain the merchant of record and keep managing fulfillment, returns and customer service (Shopify Help Center).

What the AI channel can still show

Shopify's terms let it share data so a channel can show the customer post-purchase order status updates. Google shoppers, for example, find their orders under My orders in their Google account. A channel can only show the status Shopify has, so fulfillment and tracking need to be up to date in Shopify.

Agents built on Shopify's order tools can follow an order after checkout, but only orders placed through them (Shopify Dev). The documentation covers reading an order's status, not canceling or returning it.

Spotting agentic orders

Orders from AI channels appear in your Shopify admin with channel or referrer attribution (Shopify Help Center). Channels with direct checkout receive the customer's name, email address, phone number and address. They don't see your full order history, orders from other channels or your customer database (Shopify Help Center).

For a customer who never saw your site, your order confirmation email is the first page of your support.

A support checklist for Agentic Storefronts

  1. Make your settings say what you do. Shipping zones, delivery times and return rules feed both your policies and the Knowledge Base app. AI channels repeat them.
  2. Put your support contact in every customer notification. Order confirmation, shipping, refund: Microsoft even requires your contact details on the receipt.
  3. Keep fulfillment and tracking up to date in Shopify. AI channels can only show the order status Shopify has.
  4. Work through the top unanswered questions in the Knowledge Base app. Each one you answer is one less ticket.
  5. Watch AI-channel orders. Their attribution lets you compare their questions and returns with your other orders.
  6. Choose direct checkout channel by channel. It keeps the sale inside the assistant, but without your loyalty or chat blocks. Turning it off sends shoppers to your own checkout.

Where Reponse fits

We make Reponse, so here is what it does for these customers, and what it doesn't.

  • Customers who write to you. Forward your support addresses (support@, contact@) to Reponse and each email becomes a ticket. The customer's reply lands in the same ticket, and once your domain is authenticated your team replies from your own address. Your team's work is never billed: Reponse's helpdesk includes tickets, a shared inbox and unlimited seats.
  • Replies drafted from the order. With Reponse, the Support Agent sorts each ticket, reads the Shopify order and drafts the reply. Your team reviews it and sends it.
  • The whole customer in one place. On the Shopify customer page, Reponse shows each customer's tickets, conversations and loyalty points next to their orders.
  • Buyers who land on your store. Shoppers referred by ChatGPT arrive on your product pages. There, the Ambassador answers in your store chat and hands over to your team when it can't.
  • What it can't do. Reponse's chat doesn't appear inside a Copilot, Google or Meta direct checkout, since Shopify says chat experiences aren't supported there. Those customers reach you by email.
